Guided Fly Fishing

During the past decade I have seen my guiding activities increase dramatically, especially for wild fish such as the beautiful Brown Trout. But I can also help you to search for Rainbow Trout on a windswept reservoir, pursue your first fly caught Bass on the coast or do battle with predatory Pike.

So what is a guided fly fishing trip all about? In short it saves my guests their valuable time. I sort the permits; use my local knowledge to help guests locate the fish before tying on a suitable fly. In the event that first adrenalin fuelled cast goes wayward, there is no problem because I am a qualified AAPGAI instructor who can quickly fix any faults. If you do not have the correct equipment it will be supplied free of charge for the duration of a guided trip and I will even transport you to the water in style in my cherished 4x4 fishing truck. Think of me as fishing's version of a golf caddy!

Choose from a huge range of venues, including a variety of stunning Trout streams set in breathtaking scenery. Favourite venues include the Exe, Lyn & Barle.

Stillwater Trout Fishing on West Country reservoirs

Stalk jumbo Rainbow Trout on a small stillwater or escape to a beautiful Reservoir. Enjoy a day on a boat or perhaps cast from the bank for a large grown on lake Brown Trout.

Trout & Grayling Fishing on English chalkstreams

Chalkstream fly fishing for Trout can be arranged on famous rivers such as the Test, Anton or Bourne Rivulet during the main season. Grayling offer memorable sport in quintessential English countryside during the winter.

Salmon & Sea Trout Fishing on Devon Rivers

Saltwater Fly Fishing for Bass on the North Devon coast

European saltwater fly fishing has achieved an almost cult like status. Join me for guided trips throughout the summer months chasing Bass in awe-inspiring locations.

Fly Fishing for Pike & Carp on a variety of South West venues

Pike offer the very best chance of a wild double figure fish on fly tackle in the U.K. I have the tackle, the flies, the venues and the knowledge to put you in touch with these awesome predators. Plus have you ever thought about attempting to catch a Carp on fly?

Please click the freshwater or saltwater tabs above for in depth information regarding species, venues & seasons.

River Exe: This is where my own fly fishing journey began; it's a very special place. I can introduce you to beats on the Upper Exe situated in the Exmoor National Park and beautiful sections on the Middle Exe in Devon that I have been fishing for more than 25 years.

River Barle: Back in 2009 I became aware of a huge stretch of fishing up for sale on the River Barle, a tributary of the Exe. With the assistance of several clients we purchased this amazing double bank fishery which boasts in excess of 5 miles of superb wilderness trout fishing. Guided excursions to this unique venue are exclusive to Nick Hart Fly Fishing.

River Lyn: The Lyn is a remarkable venue set in extraordinary surroundings, providing the ultimate wild Trout challenge on light tackle. Featured extensively in Claude Wades 1903 book "Exmoor Streams", the Lyn is arguably one of the most beautiful rivers in the UK; if not the world.

West Country Angling Passport: The clever angling passport initiative operated by the West Country Rivers Trust has thrown open the doors to a huge variety of fishing opportunities across the South West. Available on a token basis the rivers available include; the Lyd, Teign, Culm, Little Dart and Torridge. If you would like to try out one of these beats I can provide guide services and also act as a permit agent selling the tokens from Hart Flyshop.

West Country: Grayling are present in the River Exe and Barle, although sport is best during the mid summer to early autumn months. The River Exe in particular boasts some fine specimens touching 2lbs that will frequently rise to a dry or snaffle a well presented nymph. Wonderful sight fishing with further opportunities to target this addictive fish on stretches of the River Tone.

Chalkstreams: When the Trout anglers have hung up their waders for the season, Grayling fishing comes into its own. There is nothing quite like setting out on a clear, crisp morning to enjoy beautiful surroundings and often prolific sport provided by a species that will readily take a fly throughout the winter months. From October to December I can organise guided fishing on famous venues such as the River Test or Anton.

River Exe: The Exe can produce some excellent catches of Salmon and in many cases there is no need for a double handed rod. Fish of over 10lbs are uncommon, but during a good run of fish there is a high chance of a decent Grilse, made all the more enjoyable through the use of light tackle.

River Mole: This famous stretch of river is a tributary of the river Taw and Nick Hart Fly Fishing has exclusive access to the renowned Lenton beat. I can introduce you to one and a half miles of glorious water meandering through archetypal English countryside meadows. Fresh fish still carrying sea lice are often caught using small flies and a single handed rod approach.

Scotland: Each year I head to the highlands and spend a week on an amazing stretch of fishing at the Bridge of Marnoch. A few clients have expressed an interest in visiting this beat which is famous for the huge fish that it produces. Please contact me if you are interested in organising a party.

River Torridge: The Torridge has a long and illustrious history. Fishing on a tidal beat which was used in the feature film Tarka the Otter, there is an excellent chance of spotting one of these beautiful animals before the peace is shattered by the explosive power of a hooked Sea Trout. Mullet and Bass have also been caught here on fly!

River Mole: The Mole is home to both Salmon and Sea Trout. Boasting a selection of mouth watering pools this beat offers perfect habitat and the chance of a specimen fish. Gaze at the sky and watch as the stars appear, then slip quietly into the water, full of anticipation, ready for that electric feeling as the line snaps tight under the force of an angry sea run Brown. Simply magical!

Wimbleball Lake: This really is a fantastic venue. Situated in tranquil farmland the lake is quite long and narrow, providing several ' arms ' to fish and shelter in during poor weather. A varied range of tactics often meet success including dry fly and sunk line methods. I have electric engines, and customised boat seats to provide you with a comfortable day afloat plus 20 years of Wimbleball fishing experience to draw upon.

Clatworthy Reservoir: A stunning venue, smaller than Wimbleball so not quite so daunting, stocked with immaculate fish which are bred on site. I can take you dry fly fishing in a coch-y-bonddu beetle fall, exhilarating fishing; or if the trout go down then this deep lake set in an impressive valley responds well to sinking line techniques.

Wistlandpound Reservoir: 40 acres of bliss set within a stunning forest. This fishery offers trout in the 1 1/2 lb to 2lb bracket but expect the odd surprise. Natural Brown Trout present that will take dark flies fished quickly.

Farmoor Reservoir: Fantastic Farmoor is a concrete bowl reservoir that is easily accessed from London and the surrounding area. What it may lack in scenic value it more than makes up for with a stock of incredibly hard fighting fish. It is particularly close to my heart as in 2008 I was fortunate enough to tangle with the current fishery record Brown Trout weighing in at 17lb 8oz. If you need a winter fix of stillwater fly fishing I can help you to figure out Farmoor!

Exe Valley Fishery: I am proud to manage this stunning small stillwater situated just a short distance from the pretty village of Dulverton. One of the oldest fisheries in the UK, this place is not only steeped in history but home to an enviable stock of quality Rainbow Trout. Many of my guests attending a novice fly fishing course catch their first ever Trout on Exe Valley. This is a Troutmasters water with a new record fish of 19lb 9oz captured in April 2012. There is also an Environment Agency block licence in operation to provide families and first time anglers with a value for money day out.

Fly Fishing can be quiet, delicate and relaxing. It can also become an extreme sport .... Take a powerful single handed rod, some fishy looking streamers, a pair of chest waders, mix with a careful look at the tide guide and add some salt. Preferably finish the dish with a few hungry Bass!

Yes it's true, all sorts of sea fish take flies readily, in particular, Bass and Pollack. There is fantastic sport to be had on the coast, and just think when you know how to read the tides, pick the right locations and match the hatch ( Bass prefer crabs and baitfish to a Mayfly I have found ! ) it is all FREE!

Let me show you, how, when and where to find Bass in stunning West Country locations, the perfect solution to those dog days of summer when the Trout refuse to take. All tackle, waders and flies can be provided plus there is often the opportunity to tangle with our own European version of the Bonefish ... Mullet on Fly.
