Fly Fishing Courses - Specialist Courses

My specialist courses are very popular with guests who are keen to improve their current skills, refresh their casting proficiency, embark on new venues, learn a new style of fishing or target a different species. Utilising the practical format which forms the basis of the Novice Fly Fishing Courses, the aim is to save my guests valuable time spent learning through trial and error by offering tuition based upon a lifetime of experience. This is your chance to learn how to think like a fish!

River Fly Fishing Courses

If you have ever been lucky enough to watch Robert Redfords 1992 feature film, A River Runs Through It then you may well have been mesmerised by the fly fishing scenes immortalised by the star cast including a youthful Brad Pitt. Wading through crystal clear water, casting dry flies to beautiful Wild Trout the characters depicted in this masterpiece always seem at peace with the world while working the waters of their beloved river; no matter what outside troubles they may have. It is this therapeutic, rhythmical approach to fly fishing that many anglers envisage when they take up the sport. This is fly fishing in its purest form and I can help you discover it.

Stillwater Fly Fishing Courses

Stillwater Trout fishing in the U.K. is huge! Almost every corner of the land has some kind of fly fishing available on venues such as Exe Valley Fishery totalling just a few acres. But what about tackling reservoirs and other water storage facilities such as Wimbleball that start at a few hundred acres and rise to thousands? Fly fishing these locations tests every aspect of an angler's knowledge demanding a variety of skills including distance casting and a decent grasp of entomology. I have designed courses that will introduce you to these large lakes with options to fish from both bank and boat if required. Using my experience gained while pleasure fishing venues across the West Country and a spell as part of the England Fly Fishing squad, I will teach you how to locate the fish, pick the right line, flies and tactics.

Wild Trout Course

River fishing can be surprisingly economical and offers the chance to enjoy your sport in beautiful surroundings, targeting fish such as the Wild Brown Trout. A natural progression for stillwater anglers seeking a new challenge, this is an ideal course to enjoy on a one to one basis or with a friend.

Grayling Course

Grayling can be caught throughout the late summer months but also provide an extension to the river anglers season by offering sport during the autumn and winter. This course is designed to help you find out more about Grayling, where to access venues inhabited by these beautiful fish and the methods used to catch them.

Salmon Course

If you yearn to experience the thrill of capturing a Salmon using fly fishing tackle then this is the course for you. Specialising in single handed light line tactics on a selection of intimate West Country beats / will introduce you to the casts, tactics and flies that you need to take you one step closer to the king of fish.

Sea Trout Course

Night fishing for Sea Trout is possibly the most exhilarating form of fly fishing available, offering an adrenalin rush like no other to those anglers willing to brave the darkness. This course provides all the equipment required and two days of fascinating fishing on an exclusive beat.

The following guide offers a general outline of how a two day specialist fly fishing course based on Wild Brown Trout can be structured. Courses for other river species will follow a similar format, although timings/subjects will be altered to suit their characteristics. Time tables are extremely flexible and tailored to my guest's requirements.

2 Day Stillwater Courses

Your first session on a large reservoir can be a daunting prospect as mile upon square mile of barren water stares back at you, with seemingly no clue as to where the fish are hiding. If you have the time to spare then repeated expeditions might result in success. But what happens if this is not the case; will you seek the comfort of the small stillwater once again? My two day lake fishing courses have been designed to take the mystery out of fishing on reservoirs from boat or bank, offering an all together faster, more enjoyable (and economical!) route to success.

Beginners 2 Day Reservoir Fishing Course

Why is fishing a reservoir so much more difficult than a small stillwater? The venue size is, of course, the main issue. There are far less fish per acre and so an understanding of where and when to find them is essential. This course has been designed to offer small stillwater anglers an opportunity to discover reservoirs for the first time with an experienced instructor at their side.

Improvers 2 Day Reservoir Fishing Course

Trout that have large areas of water at their disposal quickly adapt to natural food demanding a thoughtful approach to fly choice and tactics. My improver's course covers many aspects of modern reservoir fishing and is certain to help anglers who would like to broaden their range of tactics.

The following guide offers a general outline of how a two day specialist fly fishing course based on a beginner can be structured. This is an example only, time tables are extremely flexible and tailored to my guest's requirements.
